Popular Questions
Why should I use a NACS Chimney Sweep?
Harri has completed a rigorous training course and successfully passed a full assessment to become a NACS (National Association of Chimney Sweeps) Member. He holds valid insurance for chimney sweeping, in line with the NACS Code of Conduct, and uses professional-grade equipment which is inspected during his assessment and regularly upgraded to the highest standards.
Will having my chimney swept make a mess?
Harri is highly trained in dust prevention and takes great care to minimise mess. In most cases, the sweeping process is clean and controlled. However, exceptional circumstances—such as a blocked flue due to a bird’s nest—can make it difficult to guarantee no dust or debris will escape.
What should I do to prepare for the sweep’s visit?
Ensure there is a clear path to the chimney and sufficient space to work. Harri may ask you to remove ornaments from the hearth and mantelpiece, and to clear the grate of any ash, fuel, or debris. He will bring protective dust sheets for your carpets, flooring, and furniture.
Do I need to have my gas or oil flues swept?
Yes. Even though these fuels don’t usually produce soot, blockages and other issues can still occur. Sweeping helps maintain proper function, prevents chimney fires, and reduces the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
How much does it cost to have my chimney swept?
The cost varies depending on the type of appliance or chimney and the time required to complete the job properly. Please contact Harri directly for an accurate quote.
Why do I need to see the brush come out of the top of the chimney?
Harri usually shows the brush emerging from the chimney pot to demonstrate that the flue has been thoroughly swept from bottom to top.
I’ve just moved house – should I have my chimney cleaned?
Yes. If you’re unsure when the chimney was last professionally swept, it’s important to have it cleaned for safety and peace of mind.
What is the best fuel to use?
This depends on your appliance. Where no specific fuel is required, properly seasoned wood is a popular choice—it’s clean, efficient, and carbon neutral. Some people prefer coal, in which case we recommend buying from a local, approved coal merchant for expert guidance. Always consider local smoke-free zone regulations when choosing fuel.
Why should I have my chimney swept before it is closed off?
If soot remains in a chimney that’s sealed, it can become damp and form an acidic black residue. In older chimneys, this can soak into the internal walls and cause severe staining or damage. Sweeping beforehand helps prevent these issues.
Why are there smoke marks above my fireplace?
Smoke stains may indicate that fumes are leaking back into the room. This can be a sign of a serious issue—contact Harri for advice and an inspection as soon as possible.
A bird came down my chimney. How can I stop this happening again?
Harri can recommend and install a suitable bird guard or terminal for your chimney to prevent future intrusions.
Can I rely on Harri for professional, insured service?
Absolutely. As a NACS-certified sweep, Harri follows a strict code of practice, maintains up-to-date equipment, and carries full public liability insurance for all chimney sweeping services.
